Stockholm Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2012/2013

Stockholm has become a hotbed for smooth, modern style that’s often internationally imitated. With that influence in mind, we took a look at the best collections to emerge from the city’s autumn/winter collections this past week, for those designers exhibiting that now classic Swedish spirit and for those looking to redefine it.

Noomi Rapace, the actress who played The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo‘s Lisbeth Salander in the original Swedish films, took over ribbon-cutting duties at Altewai.Saomi, this season’s Max Factor Award recipient. Saomi’s collection of sleek yet voluminous separates were brought to life with bursts of orange, metallic and even tribal-patterned beading—a rarity in these parts. Later that afternoon, long-time local favorite Carin Wester upped the ante with a string of peplums, teal mohair, Jil Sander-esque florals, fringe, and carpet-inspired digital prints in a showing that was otherwise grounded in tailored basics. Wester exaplains, “A key word that we use for the brand is ‘sharp poetry’: the softness in the materials combined with sharp and strong cuts.”

Young Fashion Industry Award winner Johanna Pihl’s debut offered up some of the sexiest silhouettes we’ve yet seen. Skirts boasted curve-hugging fits and subtle center slits, leather—in both matte and in patent—made a few appearances, and satin cardigans and blouses plunged deeper than might be appropriate during a Scandinavian winter. “Instead of hiding women behind over-sized clothes, I wanted to highlight her with pieces that show a sharp, feminine and strong expression,” says the newcomer.

“This collection is a lot about mixing,” says the three sisters behind popular local brand House of Dagmar, who finished off Tuesday’s line-up. “Two people mixed into one.” For AW12 those two people are Salander (Rapace sat in the front row) and the bright characters from artist Sigrid Hjerten’s paintings. Such diverse inspiration translated into harness-type leather tops done up with various cut-outs equally ready for ass-kicking or seduction. On top, there were full-length wool vests and quite feminine leather and suede colorblock dresses and sweaters produced by Estonian carpetmakers.

Lastly, Carin Rodebjer showed crushed velvet sweaters, skirts and jackets, circus-hued plaid ruffles and the best coats of the week: a shawl-neck, belted wool robe and a bracelet-sleeved plaid overcoat buttoning halfway up the back. Everything was stylishly unfussy and easy-going enough to don just about anywhere. “Our woman knows where she is heading so the clothes have to be elegant yet progressive,” Rodebjer explains. Minutes later, Spanish actress Rossy de Palma’s magic tricks opened proceedings at the Minimarket before models stomped down the runway in an attention grabbing mix of heavy mohair coats, sheer, embroidered black pants, snakeskin-print trench coat, and a sequined jacket under a crepe suit, the latter of which is designer Sofie Elvestedt’s favorite ensemble: “It really shows the true Minimarket look of casual elegance in its pure form.”

Benetton Sets Offer to Go Private

MILAN — The family holding company that controls Italian fashion label Benetton has set a price of 4.6 ($A5.69) per share in a public offer that aims to remove the company from the Milan stock exchange.

Edizione's offer represents a 44.6 per cent premium to the share's average price in December and six per cent over the average price over the past 12 months.

Edizione, which already controls slightly over 67 per cent of Benetton Group, will need to spend over 276.6 million euros ($A342.31 million) to acquire the remaining 60 million shares.

The share price of the company, known for its often controversial advertising campaigns, has been hitting lows unseen since 1991 as high raw material costs have pushed down profits.

Italian media speculate that removing the company's shares from the Milan stock exchange, where they have been listed since 1986, may be a sign of a possible carve up of the group among the different branches of the founding family or an international alliance.

Trade in Benetton shares were suspended on Monday due to rumours that had sent its share price soaring.

The company said Tuesday it expected net profit in 2011 to have fallen by around 70 per cent from the year before due to higher raw material costs, with its operating margin having been pushed down to 7.5 per cent from 8.6 per cent.

Nicki Minaj for "Wonderland" magazine

Nicki Minaj's one fiery '50s girl in the February/March issue of Wonderland magazine. We totally get a Pink Ladies-from-Grease girl gang vibe with her bright pink cotton candy curled bob and matching Prada Cadillac Coupe de Ville printed jacket and dress. We love how she added a bit of edginess to her ensemble by throwing on a gold-plated tooth necklace and gold snake ring, but the fiercest thing of all are those nails! She sported royal purple, gold, and pink nail art on her extra long stiletto tips. Uh-mazing. Her beauty game is absolutely out of CONTROL—we could spot those lashes from (literally) miles away, and she totally took the cat eye to the extreme. In traditional Barbz fashion, she sported some light pink lips, but this time used a fuchsia lip liner to define her pout.

She finished the look with some hot pink, '80s-inspired cheek-defining blush and sported some serious sparklers for hoop earrings.

"I feel like Barbie is great because it doesn't only focus on beauty—you have Barbies that work, they have tons of different jobs now," she told Wonderland. "And they come in different shades, which I love, and different hairstyles. So I think that they've gotten to the point where they're making girls feel like it's OK not to look like or be like the traditional Barbie. Now in terms of a body image, even male action figure dolls are cut up more than the average man—it's just how people make dolls!"

Slogan T-shirts that help you spot a moronic misogynist, from Uni Lad

I would like to write an ode to Uni Lad, which after a Twitter onslaught seems to have closed itself down.

We often have to combat "secret" misogyny. We have to battle against deep-seated stereotypical views of men and women that work against equality, feed sexist cliches and mask gendered violence. And yet with a deftness of touch, Uni Lad – a website for "LADS" – exposed these stereotypes to their bare essentials. Not only comically but sartorially (thankfully their T-shirt shop is still open); they provide us with ram-down-our-throats obvious signposts for the kind of men you don't want to be stuck at the bar with.

Nothing in the views of Uni Lad as expressed on their blog, their Facebook page or their merchandise site shows to me that they are anything but a vehicle for the socially conservative, morally regressive and privileged. The use of "lad culture" to peddle the unfunny and ill-cultured is not unique to them – and indeed, to their credit, they seem to have retreated from the internet to lick their wounds.

They did (until they thought better of it and took it down) sell a shirt on the ubiquitous "Keep Calm and Carry On" theme with the wildly imaginative alternative "Keep Calm, It Won't take Long". A hilarious nod to rape. I can't wait for their "Keep Calm and Don't Tell Mum" T-shirt, but I fear that they will shy away from paedophilia jokes in a way that they didn't from adult rape.

Halle Berry launching footwear line

Entitled "5th Avenue by Halle Berry," the collection is set to launch across Europe from March 5 and comprises 40 summery styles. The actress emphasized her decision to create an affordable collection, with prices for footwear beginning at £29.99 (€35).
Halle Berry is following in the footsteps of supermodel Cindy Crawford by designing a footwear collection for German chain Deichmann.

Berry said it was a 'dream come true' to have her own collection.
She said: 'Women have always loved shoes. It's like if your hair is not right and your shoes are not right, the woman is not right.
'If both of them are right, you're pretty much OK.

'And shoes are a statement. They can be very sexy; they can say something about where you are in the day; they can say what your mood is; they give you a chance to accessorize.
'And I'm a girl that loves to change my shoes all the time. It's an expression of who you are really. I'm a girl if I find a shoe that I really like I like to get them in all colours. I'm big on that.
'I would say I'm a nude girl because this goes with everything. You can dress it up and dress it down.
'I can't think of any girl who wouldn't want her name on a brand of shoes. I think that's pretty cool.
