The Sunday Times reporter, and recent contributor to Vogue - Marie Colvin was killed , (22 February)   in a rocket attack on the Syrian city of Homs. Colvin wrote a piece for the magazine's January issue, detailing women's lives on the front line in Libya during the siege of Tripoli last year.
William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, said he was "deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic news," this morning - and added that "her tragic death is a terrible reminder of the risks that journalists take to report the truth".
"Our mission is to report these horrors of war with accuracy and without prejudice," Colvin said at a 2010 Fleet Street ceremony honouring fallen journalists, the Telegraph reports. "We always have to ask ourselves whether the level of risk is worth the story. What is bravery, and what is bravado? Journalists covering combat shoulder great responsibilities and face difficult choices. Sometimes they pay the ultimate price."
The award-winning French photographer Remi Ochlik died in the same raid.
